What is Xylazine?
Xylazine, also known as “tranq,” is a non-opioid veterinary tranquilizer that has been found in the U.S. unregulated drug supply. Xylazine is increasingly found as an adulterant in unregulated opioids, including fentanyl and heroin. However, xylazine is a sedative, not an opioid, so its effects do not respond to the opioid reversal medication naloxone.
Xylazine causes strong drowsiness, amnesia, slowed breathing and heart rate, and low blood pressure. When cut with opioids, the combined sedation can increase the risk of drug poisoning, injury, and death. Frequent use of xylazine can cause severe ulcers, abscesses, necrosis, and other wounds to the skin, which may appear far from injection sites, and can also occur due to smoking, snorting, swallowing, and other means of ingestion.
